Hiro entered the Burnt Toast Cafe with Ando. It was strange to be returning here without Charlie. There didn't seem to be any sign of her at all. Her memorial had gone, and there wasn't even a solemn attitude about the place. Still, it had been over a year. Hiro walked uncomfortably up to the counter to order coffee for himself and Ando: it had been a long trip. As he did, he almost slipped on something lying on the floor. It was a piece of paper, face down. He bent over to pick it up, and as he turned it over, a pang of shock went straight through him. It was the photograph of him and Charlie on her birthday. He stared at his own face, captured in the past, in a place it shouldn't be. He looked so happy for someone delivering such terrible news. Wiping his eyes, he stood up again, and without a word to Ando, walked straight out of the cafe and disappeared. He needed to be alone.
